I was Wrong: 3 Mitos Tentang Minimalism

Mitos Minimalism: It's Not About DIY

Admit it… you decluttered at least once selama masa PSBB #dirumahaja. At least beres-beres salah satu laci atau lemari atau malah seluruh rumah!

I frequently declutter my book shelves and wardrobe. I’m very confident with my kitchen karena saya jarang masak, jadi I keep my kitchen equipment super minimalist.

But then, this time I decluttered my working space yang meliputi meja kerja, meja DIY, semua lemari penyimpan bahan baku DIY plus ruangan serba guna (yang sebenarnya semi Gudang gitu deh). First, I decluttered my DIY stuff, and I was so surprised that I keep so many duplicate items – terutama silicone mold to make soap, shampoo and lotion bar. I also had 2 hand blenders for DIY, plus beberapa whisk, sejumlah sendok kayu, sederet duplicate glass beakers dengan size yang sama. Then I moved to declutter lemari isi ingredients, materials for DIY and again, ada banyak bahan yang saya beli dalam jumlah terlalu banyak, ada material yang belum pernah saya pakai (malah udah lupa kenapa beli dan mau dipakai buat bikin apa) dan malah ada beberapa material yang masih terbungkus rapi tapi sudah expired! Ketika declutter barang-barang props for bazaar or pop up stores, saya tambah frustasi karena banyak duplicate items dan ada barang props yang sudah tak terpakai lagi such as wooden boxes, wooden rack, kain burlap dan sejumlah papan tulis ukuran besar.

Ternyata saya terlalu sering membeli bahan dan perlengkapan untuk DIY dan merasa it supports my simple lifestyle – jadi beli banyak ga masalah! I was overwhelmed with so many hidden clutters I had in the name of DIY and hobby. At the end I solved all of these clutters dengan upload them to marketplace dan share ke teman-teman yang membantu untuk share lagi via their WA group – and thanks, those clutters mostly have been adopted by others who need them for DIY. Ada pemahamam tentang minimalism dan simple life that I learned this time. Here are three things I learn that I was wrong before about minimalist, simple living

It’s not about Zero Waste and DIY

But we don’t have to go zero waste.

We believe in: “use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without”

tapi bukan berarti we have to make almost everything ourselves (aka DIY). I learn that DIY itu memerlukan bahan dan material dengan variasi yang tidak sedikit – and don’t forget, perkakas DIY skin care terpisah dari perkakas for food preparation (so imagine how many stuffs you should have for DIY for everything we consume). Tidak semua harus bikin sendiri karena bikin sendiri juga tidak selalu lebih ekonomis, tidak selalu lebih simple, tidak selalu bikin peace of mind dan one more thing: by buying what we need from others, we support the economy.

It’s not a specific definition

We define minimalism according to our needs. As it is a way of living, the definition of minimalism can be varied. Hidup kita berbeda-beda. I don’t count my stuff but I know I don’t have much in my wardrobe and shoe rack. You probably apply minimalism concept in your life in a different way. Find out what application of minimalism that works for ourselves and don’t worry about anything that doesn’t.

It doesn’t happen overnight

When I started to embrace minimalist lifestyle 2 years ago, I thought I have known everything about it. I decluttered, donated a lot of stuff, stopped buying many products (and make them myself). Again, I was wrong. Take it slowly and frequently editing our approach.
