How to Make Herbal Infused Oil for Cooking & DIY Personal Care

Diperbarui: 25 Apr 2020

Calendula infused olive oil

Since I adopt minimalist lifestyle, I have started making my own some of personal care products such as soap, shampoo and salve/balm. By making all of those products my own, I can pick ingredients to treat my special needs. Well, yes I have eczema on palm and fingers yang super nyebelin karena kalau pas lagi kumat, cuci tangan pakai air pun berasa perih banget. Once I visited a dermatologist and she gave me oral medicines, salve and an advice: you should be able to notice what kind of things that can trigger your eczema. Nah, salep for eczema treatment as usual contains steroid yang memang efektif untuk menenangkan kulit iritasi. Untuk pemakaian jangka pendek is fine, tapi mengingat saya bisa pakai jangka panjang, I have to consider the side effect of using steroid cream in the long run, which are loss of skin tone, deterioration of skin cells, and risk of infections. So, I need to find a natural alternative to steroid.

I learned that calendula is one of natural alternatives to treat irritated skin, including eczema – even though the study is still limited. There are many calendula based products available in the market, but I want to make soap and salve by myself. So, my first challenge was to make calendula oil – this is the ingredient I need to make soap and salve. Yes I could buy calendula essential oil, but since I need it in a large quantity for soap, I opt to do oil infusion with calendula.

What is infused oil?

Here is how I make infused oil (you can use any other herbal than calendula):

1. Pick the herb/flower

Pada dasarnya both dried and fresh herbs and flowers bisa diinfus di dalam minyak. However, I prefer to use dried herbs and flowers karena fresh ones mengandung water yang dapat mengakibatkan jamuran dan rancid (aka tengik). Of course boleh. Tergantung kebutuhan aja. In my case, I use dried calendula, kadang dicampur juga dengan dried chamomile karena keduanya memiliki efek calming for eczema skin. Ketika ingin membuat balsam untuk pegal-pegal, I infuse oil with chili powder, ginger powder dan dried peppermint.

2. Pick the oil

Ada sejumlah besar pilihan carrier oil – but it all depends on our needs. So here I list some options that I usually use to make herbal infused oil for soap making and other DIY personal care products:

· Coconut oil

Ada 2 pilihan coconut oil: refined and unrefined oil. I use this one for cooking. Unrefined coconut oil ini biasa disebut sebagai virgin coconut oil yang scent dan flavor coconut nya masih ada, dan cocok digunakan sebagai perawatan kulit karena it still has all natural polyphenols and phytonutrients.

· Olive oil

It is well-known for moisturizing skin. For personal care use, please pick extra virgin olive oil

· Sunflower oil

I love using sunflower oil to make herb infusion karena minyak ini tidak ada baunya. It is also lightweight oil yang kaya vitamin E which is perfect for all skin types!

· Grape seed oil

I love circular economy concept here. Grape seed oil disebut memiliki manfaat anti-aging, jadi perfect untuk bikin personal care products.

3. Choose the infusion method

I use both of them, depending on how emergency I need that infused oil:

· Cold infusion method

Here I will put dried herb/flower ke dalam jar/toples kaca, kemudian memasukkan carrier oil. Adapun ratio yang saya pakai adalah 1:3 (1 for herbs, 3 for the oil). Taruh jar di tempat yang terkena matahari. Jangan lupa to put label with the name of oil, herb and the date you make this infuse oil. Kocok setiap hari. Leave it for 6 weeks.

Keep it in slow cooker for at least 6 hours. After that, turn off slow cooker and strain the oil – again, I use coffee filter to get clean oil.

Tadaaaa…..after those 3 steps, you have infused oil ready to use for cooking or DIY personal care. Please store oil in a cool, dry and dark place. Your oil should be use within a year.
