Coronavirus is Here: 4 Ways to Prevent and Prepare

Mencegah Covid-19

Setelah sekian minggu tidak ada kasus Corona alias Covid-19 di Indonesia, akhirnya hari Senin tanggal 2 Maret 2020 pemerintah Indonesia mengumumkan kasus perdana Covid-19 – 2 Covid-19 patients from Depok, Jawa Barat.


Apakah kita perlu waspada? Yes. Covid-19 ini menyebar dengan sangat cepat, dan selalu ada kemungkinan komunitas, tempat kerja atau area tempat tinggal kita affected by this virus. Therefore, we need to prepare – bukan prepare for doomsday, tapi mempersiapkan diri agar tidak sakit dan lessen the risk of our community agar tidak sakit. First of all, jangan panic. Covid-19 ini memang menyebar dengan cepat tapi please note bahwa jumlah pasien yang sembuh lebih banyak, with mortality rate around 2%.



Jadi how we prepare ourselves, our family to reduce our own risk dan do our part untuk protect other:


Boost your Immunity

While many articles, news menyoroti tentang masker, hand washing, hand sanitizer, issue paling crucial dalam mencegah sakit malah tidak dibahas. I believe boosting our immunity is the best way to prevent and prepare for any illness. Menurut Harvard Health Publishing, cara untuk meningkatkan imunitas tubuh kita adalah

  • Makan sayur dan buah

  • Stop smoking

  • Exercise regularly

  • Tidur yang cukup

  • Maintain a healthy weight

  • Minimize stress

Optional: jika dibutuhkan, get food supplements! I get extra boost dari liquid chlorophyll. I haven’t got sick in months – include flu, pilek dan masuk angin, bahkan setelah events berhari-hari yang melelahkan! Lately I also consume spirulina for extra boost.



Wash Hand Properly

Again, according to Harvard Health Publishing, disebutkan bahwa the primary way to prevent infection adalah good hygiene – that includes cuci tangan yang benar with soap and water. Wash your hands often, setelah dari toilet, sebelum dan setelah makan, after sneezing, coughing, blowing nose dan after other dirty tasks: berkebun, beberes rumah, dan sebagainya. In the meantime, avoid shaking hands, kissing cheek and hugging to prevent spreading germs.


While washing hands with soap and water is essential, ketika opsi ini tidak ada, wash your hands with hand sanitizer yang easy to carry everywhere. It is recommended untuk menggunakan hand sanitizer dengan kandungan alcohol minimum 60%. You can make DIY hand sanitizer with or without alcohol - according to your need.



Clean often

Bersih-bersih segala permukaan yang mungkin affected by virus Covid-19 – handphone, meja, laptop and any other surface. The most effective cairan bebersih adalah rubbing alcohol alias isopropyl alcohol 70% (atau lebih). Isopropyl alcohol ini dipakai sebagai disinfectant within pharmaceutics, hospitals, cleanrooms, and electronics or medical device manufacturing. I mix rubbing alcohol with several drops of eucalyptus and lemon essential oil.


Please note, alcohol is potentially flammable. Be careful when using it near stove, oven. Rubbing alcohol ini cepat ter-evaporasi, so just wait for a while sebelum menggunakan kompor/oven. Please also check and test at small area for any type of surface before cleaning it up with rubbing alcohol.



Stock some supplies

Skip stocking face mask and hand sanitizer. At least: prepare medicine stock: obat generic untuk keperluan sendiri, termasuk obat flu, demam. I always keep C&F in my medicine box, dan beberapa obat gosok (muscle balm, vapor rub), koyo and occasionally I have Tolak Angin in stock!


Do we need to stock home supplies? Hwell probably…NY Times mentioned the necessary to prepare a month supply of makanan, bahan pembersih (read: rubbing alcohol, laundry detergent, dishwashing soap), food supplement. Please do not only keep instant noodle and biscuits in stock. The best food to keep us healthy adalah makanan sehat yang penuh nutrisi. Saya prefer untuk menyimpan frozen fish, frozen vegetables, canned tuna, pasta, oats, whey protein dan dried herbs and spices (garlic!)
