Company of One: Building a Minimalist Business

So, you want to have your own business…

My next question is “Kamu pengen punya bisnis seberapa besar?”

A minimalist business, a minimalist working space

In other words, size does matter in business. We learn that bigger means better in business. Itu sebabnya, the term, concept of growth hacking, accelerator and scaling up are very familiar lately. Punya bisnis harus cepat berkembang, cepat besar dengan berbagai new strategy dan dibantu dengan inkubasi dan mentor yang menjanjikan percepatan perkembangan usaha (accelerator dan scale up).

When I and my team started our bootstrapping business nearly 2 years ago, we had a vision, a goal to make our business BIG. Wajar kan ya? We establish an upcycling business which is repurposing spent coffee grounds into natural, simple personal care products. We have to realize that to build a big business; we need to have a big team, big capital, big production capacity and big resources. At least, berarti kami harus invest lab equipment dengan kapasitas lebih besar, hire more people –tim marketing dan sales yang handal. In one point, I questioned myself: is it really what I want? I resigned from my full-time work for a flexible, minimalist lifestyle dan bukan untuk menghabiskan waktu managing fixed asset and human resources. I was so stressful that I was so unproductive for months

Ketika saya browsing buku untuk dibawa liburan, I found a book titled “Company of One: Why Staying Small is The Next Big Thing for Business” by Paul Jarvis. For someone who embrace minimalism concept like me, buku ini lansung menarik perhatian saya. Cuss…buy and download! I spent 3 days to finish the book. This book is really inspiring. It’s really an answer I was looking for. This book teaches me bahwa punya bisnis yang sukses tidak harus dengan bikin bisnis yang besar. Kita bisa memilih menjadi tetap kecil dan profitable, tanpa hassle of managing big team, requiring big capital to grow and sacrificing free/family time. This is what I want: I want to build my business around my life and not the other way around!

If you feel the same way – that you want to stay small but profitable and question growth, here is three things to consider to run a minimalist business:

1. Define your “enough”

Tentukan batasan besaran bisnis yang kita mau – it should be a specific, measurable goal, for instance: number of our sales or profit.

Sometimes “enough” or even less is all we need, since “more” too often equates to more stress, more problems and more responsibilities in both life and business.

2. Focus, focus, focus

To run a minimalist business, we need to focus on our best. We need to realize that we can’t be a superman/superwoman, doing everything by ourselves. But we can choose to focus on what we can do best. I enjoy creative process in developing a new product concept, in making some products, in writing contents but hwell I’m not good in doing administrative stuff including accounting work. I have to admit I do pretty well in the things I enjoy doing. So pick what you are good at and enjoy doing it and focus on that!

3. Outsource, Automate, Collaborate

Meskipun disebut sebagai company of one, it doesn’t mean this company is being run by only one person. Keahlian kita terbatas, it is impossible to excel in everything. There are three options we can do to overcome our limitation, yaitu: outsource, otomatisasi dan berkolaborasi. There are plenty freelancers yang bisa membantu kita untuk mengerjakan hal-hal yang kita tidak excel in doing it, for instance: social media management, jasa desain, ataupun jasa setting up booth for our pop up market. Kita juga bisa meng-otomatisasi beberapa pekerjaan seperti pekerjaan customer service – there are some app to help us answering customers’ questions, accounting dan CRM automation juga bisa dilakukan dengan software pendukung. Kita bisa berkolaborasi dengan another company of one to pursue our mutual benefit and goal. We are really fortunate to meet another startup, Cooltura.id that then we collaborate to run DIY Make Use Spent Coffee Grounds. We share the same purpose and passion in educating and reducing waste.

Okay, building a minimalist business is not for everyone. It is about creating freedom than profits. We are free to choose the size of business we want and it has its own consequences.
